JACOB DO BANDOLIM

A JEWISH GENIUS

One of the seminal figures in Choro music was Jewish mandolinist and composer, Jacob do Bandolim. Although there was always a significant Jewish population in Brazil going back to its beginnings as a colony (in fact, the first Jewish community in the US in the mid 17th century went to New Amsterdam from Brazil), there are few Jewish composers, especially in Choro. Jacob happens to be one of the key figures and his songs are among the most played Choros throughout the world to this day. During their Fall 2022 tour, Duo Violão Plus One performed two tribute concerts, one at Anshe Emet Synagogue in Chicago and the other at Congregation Shalom in Milwaukee, that showcased the his genius. Both shows were met with such enthusiasm that the group decided to expand the show’s repertoire to include other Jewish composers from Brazil. Look forward to more of these special performances throughout 2023!
